I recently purchased trial sizes of three oils from StoreEland, an online shop: Pure Jojoba Oil, Pure Australian Emu Oil, and Pure Rosehip Oil. The seller, Hannah, was very kind, and gave me a free sample vial of Cleopatra Oil, which is a pre-mixed concoction containing different oils that are supposed to benefit the skin.

Why my sudden interest in oils? It was mainly Cathy's post on her skin care routine that got me curious. Because using oils in place of commercially-available moisturizers worked very well for her, I wanted to try some for myself in the hopes of making my skin as beautiful as hers.:)

Pure Australian Emu Oil

There have been multiple threads about this oil in GirlTalk, a local forum I frequent. It's derived from fats of the emu bird, an avian species commonly farmed (as far as I know) in Australia, and is believed to have anti-acne and anti-aging properties, apart from its moisturizing effect. It's said to penetrate the skin very well; it's absorbed transdermally (Quick anatomy review: The dermis is the second layer of our skin, after the epidermis which is the outermost layer; transdermal absorption means the substance goes all the way through the epidermis and dermis), making it a good carrier for other treatments we might want to apply. There are a lot of raves about this in GirlTalk, and when I searched it on Google, I found great reviews on Acne.org and other websites as well. I was hesitant to try this, because I couldn't help but be a little grossed out with the fact that I'll be putting oil from a bird on my face, and the emu bird sounded a little exotic to my ignorant self so I was worried at first that it might be an endangered species or something like that. However, after some intensive Googling I found that the bird was in fact commonly bred in Australia and some other countries. I also read in the website I purchased it from that this particular brand of emu oil is refined and odorless.. so that made it a little less scary, at least.

I'm more than halfway through my small bottle of this. It's a rather thick oil so I only use it at night. I put about two drops at the back of my one hand, use the other hand to dot it on my forehead, cheeks, nose and chin, and then blend it all over.

I really like this. I use it after toning and before putting on benzoyl peroxide. Benzoyl peroxide is a very effective anti-acne treatment for me, but it does tend to make my skin flaky, rough and dull. Using emu oil before my benzoyl peroxide treatment made my skin softer and got rid of the flakes. It also seemed to have made my benzoyl peroxide more effective, but I'm really not sure about this. I just noticed that my pimples seemed to shrink faster using this combination, and I'm guessing that might be because the emu oil helped the benzoyl peroxide penetrate deeper.

My face does get greasy in the morning, but that doesn't really bother me because I can wash it off.

I also suffer from eczema, and I applied this on my eczematous areas. They haven't completely disappeared, but this helps soothe the flaky parts and prevents them from drying out and getting itchier.

Pure Jojoba Oil

It's been raining almost incessantly for several days now here in Manila, and that made the weather relatively colder. As a result, my trial bottle of emu oil seems to be more viscous than usual and I have a hard time getting it out. So I decided to move on to the other oils and try them out.

The jojoba oil is much lighter than the emu oil. This has also been raved about in Acne.org as a moisturizer. What's special about this oil is that its structure is very close to human sebum - yup, the very oil that's naturally produced by our skin to protect itself.

I liked this, too. It was very light, it moisturizes well and didn't make me as greasy in the morning. It's also absorbed well by the skin.

I used this more for my body than for my face simply because it's been helping a lot in soothing my eczema, and also because though it was moisturizing, based on my readings it didn't really have other properties which could potentially benefit the skin. In the future, though, I think I'll try what Cathy does and mix this with some other oils. That way I'll get the light texture that I like this for, while also getting benefits from the other oils.

Pure Rosehip Oil

This was a very light oil, too, like the jojoba. It smells kind of herbal, but not in a bad way. I just tried this last night, so I don't know about the effects yet, but I did notice that I broke out a bit today. I don't know if my applying this oil triggered the breakout, because I also perspired a lot yesterday from running around in this incredibly humid weather. And I'm really breakout-prone so that could just be my hormones getting annoying again.

I don't know if I'll stop using this, though, because when I Googled it up I saw a lot of raves in MakeUpAlley! It's said to be good for acne and scars. It contains a lot of Vitamin C and is also unique to other oils in that it contains retinol. So it's possible that it makes skin purge too, just like the topical retinoids that people usually apply to help with acne and wrinkles. Maybe I'll try this for a few more days and see if my skin gets any better.

I think I'm liking using pure oil on my face in place of moisturizer, even if it's only at night. It does make my skin much softer compared to when I use a commercial moisturizer. However, I'll have to keep observing my skin for any untoward reactions.

I've used Emu Oil for a couple of months last year. It was great and made my skin smooth and less oilies. But I still miss the harsh ingredients of my chemical laden derma set, hehe... Plus I want to get rid of pimple marks on my face that's why I switched to products with whitening effects on it.

I still have stocks in our fridge of Emu Oil, I intend to use them as a breather once I used up my derma set. =)
